Papers, 1861-1889 and n.d.

The collection consists mainly of correspondence from family members to Charles A. Gould, who was originally from Lexington, Mass. It covers the period from when Gould applied to President Lincoln for the directorship of the consulate at Prince Edward Island in March 1861, through his service in the Civil War, and several civilian positions he held in Ky. after the war. This correspondence gives a particularly good view of family relationships, as Charles had two brothers and six sisters who wrote to him. Their concern for each other's health and welfare is routinely reflected. The Civil War does not figure prominently into this correspondence, although some letters describe civilian reaction to the end of the war and to Lincoln's death. The problems encountered during the postwar reconstruction period are described in areas of Texas, Georgia, and Kentucky in letters dated March 31 and Oct. 29, 1866, and September 17, 1867. The bulk of the correspondence was written from Lexington, Mass., giving an idea of social and economic conditions there at that time. The remainder of the collection contains legal papers (1871-1872), financial papers (1864-1873), and printed material (1865-1870s).
